Which version of Jason Campbell is it Redskins NFL supporters should anticipate this season? The quarterback that is maligned and halfway out of the sphere? Or is he the second coming of Doug Williams, just like Clinton Portis has so powerfully stated lately?
Campbell’s performance is what the coming season is all about. Clinton Portis might end this season with about eleven thousand running yards through his lifetime, aligning himself for Hall of Fame contemplation with about 3 or 4 solid seasons remaining in his playing days.
It won’t matter.
Malcolm Kelly could turn out to be among the leading youthful WRs in the game of football this season, capable of receiving comparisons to Andre Johnson and Calvin Johnson by year’s end.
It won’t matter.
Brian Orakpo could be the next version of Lawrence Taylor, doing damage on the weak side of the entire NFC East.
It will not make a difference.
The only thing makes a difference is that the team comes out on top in at least ten games, and that their quarterback is the most important individual in every one of those expected ten victories.
Never mind the fact that he went 8 straight games in 2008 without an INT, it was all revolving around the amazing Clinton Portis during that stretch. When the tide turned on the Skins, it wasn’t Clinton Portis who got the criticism.
It was Campbell, who was not the sole player with diminished output in the course of the swoon, although was the only recipient of the talk radio and print media commotion that came after.
The majority of people are in Jason Campbell’s defense, and nobody heads up that corner’s praise louder than I do.
But from a neutral standpoint, there is a fine line between brilliance and debacle for Campbell this approaching year, and zero else Washington might do or is able to do will overshadow the steadiness he must show from the first game and later.
