Clarance Seedorf scored at the 85 minute mark to make the score respectable, but Man U controlled play after the halftime break. After England left these shores for South Africa a couple of weeks ago, there was much anticipation that finally, the team might possibly bring the trophy home. Yet, that dream was destroyed in no uncertain terms by the old enemy Germany in Bloemfontein as England crashed out of the competition losing 4-1. How did such an experienced team who qualified so effortlessly fail to perform? Not surprisingly, the English media has produced no lack of scape goats and causes for what was England’s heaviest defeat at a World Cup.
