Radical projects require radical power tools to make everything- well, radical. What’s important is anything else is understanding your power tools and the individual jobs each one of them has to do. Every year a lot of people hurt themselves by improperly using power tools. We’re out to change that, one reader at a time.

Power tools are inherently dangerous though. Safety precautions should be used at all times and if you skip this and cut something off or end up breathing though a tube, it’s not going to be because of ole Zeeman Haus, I can tell you that. So here are a few tips that should help you work safely and maybe save some money on doctor’s bills.

Remember this; use the right bits and blades for the job. Your final product will be better overall, but also you will work safer. A wood bit used on a piece of metal is never a good idea. First off, there’s next to zero chance you’re going to get the bite you need to get through. Secondly, there’s always the chance of the bit breaking and cause all kinds of damage to people and property. The same can be said for saw blades as well; use the right blade for the job! Failure to do so can result in a ruined project or hand.

Clothing is yet another mistake people make often. Loose clothing and jewelry can get caught in moving pieces and suck up whatever it’s wrapped around into the machinery. By the same token, cutting wood with no shirt on at all is about the same as frying bacon with no shirt on. Think about protecting yourself.

Eye protection is not only a good idea; it’s the best one yet. Without it you eyes are exposed to dust and other foreign objects that could very well put you in a world of hurt. Even if you wear prescription glasses consider alternative to going without any sort of eye protection on the sides. Things don’t always fly around at 90 degree angles. Remember that.

Good ventilation is also a must with power tools. For one thing you want your tools to not overheat. For another you have to worry about an accumulation of dust and debris in the air when there’s nothing to suck it out. When refinishing old furniture this is very important as the older finish or paint may contain harmful material.

Proper maintenance of your power tools is also a must. Some tools do require some oiling; those that do should be oiled per the manufacturer’s recommendation. Making sure they stay clean and dry. Storing your power tools between uses requires some forethought. Keeping them stored in individual spots helps insure they don’t get broken between uses.

Keeping things safe will enable you to enjoy your power tools for years to come. Keeping safe also helps in that area. An operator with four fingers and a thumb has a better chance than one with three and a thumb, or less. Stay safe and enjoy your power tools, but respect them above all else.
