Football, or commonly known as soccer in the United States is one of the most celebrated and watched sports across the world. Everyone will no doubt have their favorite type of player and you will usually find more than one aspect of the game that is exciting. A successful soccer player should have some form of skill in terms of positioning, handling of the ball, set pieces, passing and shooting.
Like any other game, there are specific skill set required for specific position in a soccer game, this article will talk about the function of various position and what skills are needed to play in that particular position.
Defenders
One of the important skills set about becoming a defender is to be physically strong as well as sure footed, and this is especially essential when they are playing against a team with a strong forward. The main function of a defender is to win the ball way from the opposing team forward and keep the ball away from their own goal area, thus the primary skill here is to know how to tackle and win the ball. Good defenders are usually those who win the ball without conceding a foul.
One thing is true about a strong defense is that you will never lose in a game, an even better defender will score from time to time from corners, because of their physical strength and height advantage in heading the ball.
The Midfielders
Generally, you can find two different type of midfielder, one that is attacking minded and one that is defensive minded. An attacking minded mid fielder will the play maker of a team, creating opportunities for the strikers to score, and sometimes scoring themselves when the opportunity arise. Their primary skill is the ability to pass the ball, as well as having the vision to create openings for the team’s striker.
For defensive midfielders, their main job is to protect their defense line, and try to win the ball before it even reaches their defenders. As such, the important thing about being a defensive midfielder is the ability to intercept and cut the opposition’s play. They will be providing covers for their defenders, a good defensive midfielder can even pass as well as an attacking one, and as such they are also known for their passing abilities.
Forwards
Forwards, also known as strikers are responsible for putting the ball into the opponent’s net. Therefore some of the best known strikers are extremely agile, strong, as well fast and they are well known for their scoring abilities. Given that most people would rather watch a high scoring match than a boring one with no goals, you will find some of the most well known players of all time are strikers.
