Soccer is hard to play, but doesn’t require too much equipment. The primary thing you’ll be needing is the right footwear. You need cleats that are comfortable and easy to move in. Each game lasts around 90 minutes, and you have to be able to play the entire time. Here’s a guide to what gear you will need, head to toe, to play a soccer game.

Jersey: Most jerseys are loose fitting and comfortable, and may have either short or long sleeves. Manufacturers may also make fitted jerseys for women, which are smaller through waist and shoulders. Jerseys are usually made from a synthetic breathable fabric that keeps players dry during play.

Shorts: you can pretty much wear any comfortable shorts in soccer. There aren’t a lot of rules on this. Most players prefer shorts that are baggy and a bit long but not super long. They look like running shorts but maybe baggier.

The key is for movement to be unimpeded. Because of this you probably want to stay away from the longer basketball style shorts that hit below the knee.

Socks: Most soccer socks are very thick and durable, to ensure protection for your feet. They are made either of synthetic fabric or heavy cotton, and they also need to be able to cover shin guards.

Shin guards: these are critical pieces of safety equipment. Players at all levels should be wearing shin guards in games. You will often get hit or bruised in the shins and guards help you not to get seriously injured.

The guard looks like a concave oblong with straps. Position it over your shin bone, and strap the straps around your calf to secure it in place. Then you cover it with your sock. Strikers’ shin guards are smaller and lighter. Full sized shin guards are recommended for goalies, defenders, and midfielders, as these players need full coverage. Recreational leagues even require players to have shin guards.

Headgear: Many soccer players wear headgear. This is especially popular with younger players. The headgear worn in soccer looks like a headband. It’s quite light, and it helps prevent injury when players’ heads hit together or when you head the ball.
