Matthew Stafford made his intro, and it was, how can I say, underwhelming? 16 for 37 for 205 yards and 3 INTs.
It wasn’t that Stafford was throwing bad-looking passes. They happened to be well crafted spirals that simply happened to wind up in New Orleans Saints’ possession.
Stafford’s accuracy will be insulted for a long period until he begins hitting passes like the great looking hook-up with Calvin Johnson on a frequent basis.
And just what did we all expect to have occur? All those who happened to be in support of starting Stafford, allow me to be the first to tell you, there will be further games similar to this until he figures things out. Although where was the running game? Where was the offensive line that showed such promise in the preseason? Where was the defense?
Ah yes, the defense - a category that was mostly ignored in the ‘09 draft as the Lions opted to focus on offense.
No sacks on Drew Brees, which is not really astonishing as he was merely sacked thirteen times during the 2008 season, but wow, I do not believe they got a hand on him the full game.
I know I had speculated the Lions capturing between 6 to eight games this season…however currently I’m not so sure. They won’t go winless; or I hope not.
The Lions are in a steep learning curve, and I believe Jim Schwartz, Scott Linehan, and Gunther Cunningham are the fitting coaches to get the team in the right direction.
I’m furthermore somewhat certain that as a product of this spectacle, the Lions will be doing drills until they collapse.
Although I’m not as frightened about the offense as I am about the defense. The Lions did score 27 points, and most of the time, that’s going to win you several games.
But giving up 515 yards, 28 first downs, and 6 touchdown passes will not get you a place at the Super Bowl unless you are buying a ticket.
