Teamwork is the basis for any successful team. This is emphasized by coaches around the globe in different gym rooms, locker rooms and sports fields. There is little chance for a team to be successful if it relies solely on an individual player. When a cohesive team is created it works on the strengths of all its members. This is how cougar football can claim its success, as well as any other team.
When you are coaching such a team, there are several factors to take into consideration. For instance, does the team have a clear, common goal? If the goal is clear and all team members understand what it is, this will make working together easier. However, beware of separate goals that are not beneficial to the team.
Do the team members actively encourage one another? A team member is more likely to work harder when they know their teammates are rooting for them, and are also dependent on them. This will go a long way for the mental and physical endurance of a sports player. On the other hand, if there is negative bashing going on within the team this may very well work to break the self-confidence of the individual on the receiving end. This will influence performance as well, negatively impacting the team’s common goal.
Keep the lines of communication between team players and coaching staff open at all times. Like any good relationship, being able to communicate any frustrations or misgivings in order to deal with them is essential. If issues are not dealt with immediately, it can translate into poor performance on the field. Remember, great physical plays are very in tune with the mental and emotional state of the player.
Does each player know what is expected of them? When each individual on the team knows their duty, and there are no ambiguities, this will lead to more effective playing on the field. However, if roles are vague or blurred this will easily cause friction. Also keep in mind that all players need to be treated equally, regardless of their role in the team. This will help build a sense of camaraderie. All contributions to team success have to be recognized.
Is there a sense of mutual respect among team players and the coaching staff? When you are playing and learning with people you respect, you are more likely to work harder. You admire them so you probably do not want to let them down. This is all true in the sports arena as well.
The team image they are trying to create for themselves is important. This leads back to the individual acts, even on personal time, and how this impacts the team. Is there a healthy image out there about the team, or not? If not, how can the team as a group, and individually, change it?
A successful team has players with common team goals. Their vision is clear, and the knowledge that their success depends on the success of every individual on the team is essential. Each player whether in cougar football, or any other sport, needs to understand that being apart of a team is thinking beyond the self. It is also about understanding that team success is also individual success.
