The position of goalkeeper is one of the most important in football. It is often goalkeepers who have the most impact on the final score so it’s important the equipment they use is of a good standard and well looked after. Goalkeepers gloves are quite delicate and require a lot of looking after if they are to last an entire season. The more worn they are the less effective they are.

The aim of this article is to provide you with all the tricks and tips you need for keeping your goalkeeper gloves in great condition throughout the season.

I. As soon as you’ve finished playing, rinse your gloves in warm water to remove any dirty from them.

II. When you get home, it’s time to give them a more thorough clean. Run them under warm water again and press out all the dirt you can find. Don’t stop until you can see the original colour of the foam, only then will you know all the dirt has gone.

III. It’s important to clean the inside of the glove as well as the outside. The palm of the hand can get very sweaty in gloves, and if this isn’t washed out then it can become very smelly. Use cheap shampoo if the smell lingers, as I’ve found it to be as good if not better than more expensive varieties.

IV. When the gloves are clean rinse away any suds and shampoo which is remaining. Use an old toothbrush to remove any dirt or grass from the Velcro straps.

V. Dry the gloves in a room that is warm but not in the way of direct sunlight. This will ensure the gloves don’t crack as they dry.

VI. Once they are dry, store the gloves in a protective bag. This will prevent them from getting dirty by the next time you play in them.

Goalkeeper gloves are expensive with some styles over 100 so they are worth looking after. Out of all the above the most important thing to remember is to dry your gloves thoroughly after use, otherwise they will go mouldy and/or rot.
